AI That Stays Out of the Way: The Lessonspace Approach to AI

What is Lessonspace doing with AI?
Since day one, our goal at Lessonspace is to make teaching easier. In keeping with that goal, Lessonspace will always use AI to continue to make teaching easier. We aim to build AI tools to support you, not to replace you. We believe the best AI tooling stays out of your way and works hard in the background to help you do what you are already doing as a tutor.
How does Lessonspace use AI?
Our first AI-powered feature is Lesson Summaries. Lesson Summaries are intended to save tutors time and hassle, making it easier for you to compile feedback on past sessions and plan future lessons. We believe students need to learn from human tutors, and we do not believe AI should be a substitute for that.
How do Lesson Summaries work?
If you turn on Lesson Summaries in your dashboard, you’ll get a 300 word summary of each recorded lesson and suggested next steps for your upcoming lessons.
You can also choose not to turn on Lesson Summaries, and your lessons won’t be summarised at all.
Here’s how it works:
Once you turn on Lesson Summaries from the Lessonspace dashboard, any new sessions you have will be summarised. (Note: Recording must also be enabled for summaries to work. We convert the recorded audio to text to know what was covered in the lesson).
The text transcript is sent to OpenAI to generate a summary. The summary is meant to describe, not evaluate. Our prompt explicitly excludes Personally Identifiable Information (PII) for participant safety. The prompts will be improved over time, but currently exclude any performance- or emotion-based evaluations.
We never train any Large Language Models (LLMs) on your data, and we explicitly don’t allow any of our sub-processors (i.e. OpenAI) to do so either.
Within an hour after you end a session, you’ll see a 300-word summary under your session on the Sessions page. The summary will always be available in your dashboard unless you remove it.
What is Lessonspace doing with your data?
Simply said, it’s your data.
We don’t sell your data.
We don’t use your data to train an LLM.
We are explicitly ensuring that the OpenAI service we use does not store or train on your data.
How much do Lesson Summaries cost?
Lesson Summaries are included for free across all Basic ($9/m), Starter ($29/m), Pro ($99/m) and Advanced ($199/m) plans. AI services charge Lessonspace for the use of their tools, but we believe the real value for our tutors is the time they get back. For that reason, we have decided to make this feature available for free, and because our pricing model allows you to pay as you grow, it’s a win-win. For customers who are not on one of our standard plans, you’ll need to pay to activate Transcriptions, after which Lesson Summaries are free. Transcriptions are a paid addon, charged at $0.001 per transcribed participant minute.
How to turn Lesson Summaries on or off
Lesson Summaries are switched off by default: we will never opt you in without your consent. If you are ready to switch Lesson Summaries on, go to the Settings > Recordings page in your Lessonspace dashboard and toggle Summarise Sessions by Default on. If you need help finding the settings, take a look at our help guides on Lesson Summaries.
How to use Lessonspace’s AI tools to positively impact your tutoring
There are a number of ways you can use Lessonspace’s built-in tools to positively impact your tutoring or tutoring business. Here’s some examples:
Use Lesson Summaries to help structure your feedback, reporting or post-lesson notes.
Use Lesson Summaries to help suggest homework or focus areas for the next lesson.
Use Lesson Summaries to save you time. If you’re tutoring 20 lessons a week, and spending 10 minutes writing up feedback, automated summaries can save you more than 3 hours every week. What will you do with that extra time?
Use Lesson Summaries to get a quick overview of all the lessons being taught under your Organization’s brand and ensure quality.
Download full Lesson Transcripts to find reference of particular questions, or content areas you focused on during the lesson. (Note that this is a separate, paid addon)
The TL/DR version: Lessonspace's Stance on AI
Our stance on AI is simple:
Students need human teachers: We’re not using AI as a substitute for that. We're building AI tools that make teaching easier.
It’s your data: Privacy and consent are non-negotiable. Any AI-powered tools are switched off by default and we don’t train LLMs on your data.
