Inside ClassDojo’s Seamless Switch from Zoom to Lessonspace

As Dojo Tutor continued to grow, ClassDojo needed to move from Zoom to a purpose-built online classroom without disrupting lessons. Lessonspace partnered closely with ClassDojo to support the transition through phased onboarding, tutor education, technical implementation, and dedicated enterprise support.

With the mission to give every child an education they love, ClassDojo is one of the world’s leading EdTech platforms, connecting over 50 million students, teachers, and parents across 180 countries. ClassDojo expanded its impact through Dojo Tutor, an online tutoring service designed to deliver personalized, high-quality instruction directly to young learners, operating with thousands of active tutors.

This expansion of Dojo Tutor meant ClassDojo needed a platform that was intentionally built with children's learning in mind. When using Zoom as a teaching space, tutors had to juggle separate external whiteboards, documents, and resources. Overall, there was an opportunity to improve the user experience and cater specifically to online teaching rather than a corporate meeting experience.

With a built-in interactive whiteboard and a hands-on, enterprise-level support team, Lessonspace was the obvious choice to improve the learning experience on Dojo Tutor.

Zoom is an excellent meeting tool, but it wasn’t designed with children’s learning in mind. When used for tutoring, it often creates passive learning experiences that don’t align with what educational research tells us about how kids learn best.

The Challenge: A Seamless Move

With thousands of tutors already actively using Dojo Tutor, a smooth transition from Zoom was a key priority for the Tutor Operations Team at ClassDojo. The focus needed to be on the tutor experience and building their confidence in the platform while minimizing disruption. Lessonspace needed to remain reliable while it was quickly rolled out to the existing tutors.

Structured change management was critical, along with ongoing technical support for the Management Team and tutor education. Enterprise-grade security and compliance were non-negotiable.

The Solution: An All-in-One Classroom with Dedicated Support

ClassDojo and Lessonspace worked together on a structured migration designed to make the transition as smooth as possible for thousands of tutors. The approach combined phased onboarding, tutor education, technical implementation support, a purpose-built classroom, and dedicated enterprise support.

Intentional onboarding and change management

ClassDojo ensured tutors were comfortable with the change through a structured, high-touch onboarding process supported by the Lessonspace team.

The migration followed a carefully planned, phased launch approach focused on understanding ClassDojo’s needs. Lessonspace provided guidance and suggested best practices for onboarding, with regular meetings and check-ins supporting ClassDojo from both technical and operational perspectives.

Rather than moving all tutors at once, the teams first soft-launched the platform to a select group of experienced tutors. This allowed ClassDojo to gather early feedback, identify any issues, and refine the setup before rolling Lessonspace out more widely.

Tutor education was another important part of the rollout. The comprehensive tutor knowledge base provided help guides, training materials, and demo spaces to support tutors as they moved to the new classroom. Thousands of tutors also enrolled in the free Online Teaching Course to learn platform navigation, interactive teaching strategies, and online classroom management.

Purpose-built classroom and enterprise tools

Once tutors were onboarded, the Lessonspace classroom gave them the teaching tools they previously had to manage across separate platforms, while also giving ClassDojo the control and support needed to operate at scale.

  • A white-labelled classroom space for ClassDojo: The Dojo Tutor branding, virtual backgrounds, and pre-loaded lesson content helped make the transition feel like part of the existing Dojo Tutor experience rather than a move to a separate third-party platform.

  • The interactive whiteboard: Tutors could teach using interactive tools directly within the classroom, reducing the need to switch between external whiteboards, documents, and other resources. STEM editors, document uploading, and educational resources are embedded directly into the space.

  • Session recordings and transcription: Provided ClassDojo with greater visibility into lessons and supported internal quality assurance.

  • Management oversight: Gave ClassDojo control over tutor activities, session lengths, and permissions, which was important when managing a large tutor network.

  • Dedicated support for the ClassDojo team: A direct Slack channel and regular strategic check-ins gave the team a clear route to technical support throughout the rollout and beyond.

  • SOC 2 Security Compliance: Helped meet ClassDojo’s enterprise security and compliance requirements.

By combining structured change management, tutor education, and dedicated technical support, ClassDojo successfully moved thousands of tutors from Zoom to Lessonspace in just one month, without teaching downtime.

The success of the migration came from:

  1. Strong technical implementation support from the Lessonspace team

  2. A structured, phased onboarding process that allowed ClassDojo to test, gather feedback, and refine the experience before scaling

  3. Tutor education and resources that helped thousands of tutors become comfortable with the new platform

  4. A purpose-built online classroom designed specifically for interactive online teaching

  5. Enterprise-grade support, security, and control needed to operate at scale

For ClassDojo, the project showed that large-scale platform migration could be carried out quickly, without disrupting teaching, while still giving tutors a purpose-built classroom.

The partnership between ClassDojo and Lessonspace shows what’s possible when the technology, implementation support, and change management needed for an enterprise education rollout are considered together.
